📍Kamikochi (上高地) Kamikochi in Nagano Prefecture is one of the most beautiful mountainous places in Japan. It offers breathtaking views through all seasons but it’s said to be the most beautiful in autumn and summer. I went there in summer and was very surprised by its beauty. The majestic mountain ranges seem to embrace the surrounding landscape, the clear water flowing on the Azusa River, the green forest, all create a wonderful picture of nature. When traveling to Kamikochi I recommend you to: 1. Experience the spectacular views of the Hotaka Range peaks from Kappabashi Bridge. And if you come there in summer, try sitting by the Azusa river and touch the water, it’s surprisingly freezing. 2. Take a hike out to Myojin Pond 3. This bridge is the "city center" of peaceful and tranquilat Kamikochi. 5mins walk from the bus terminal, several hotels along with restaurants, shops and snack counters are located at each side of the bridge. Further down (same side of the bus terminal) you can find free public toilet if you dont feel like donating 100yen to use the toilet at the bus terminal. Another 5 mins further is the nice konashidaira campsite. Great place with a nice view! We really had a nice time, even though we walked many km. I will totally come again in the future, if i have the chance.

Kappabashi is the center of Kamikochi, and around the Kappabashi bridge you can find amenities like a visitors center, small restaurants and hotels, and some shops. This hike covers mostly flat terrain and requires little to no hiking experience. If you want to do hike you can go to the Myojin Pond and back to Kappabashi via a different trail. This will take an additional 3.5 hours, and it is very much worth the trek. Myojin Pond is another famous highlight in Kamikochi with a tranquil atmosphere, a small shrine, and pretty foliage in autumn.

Hiking is one of the most popular weekend pastimes for people who live in Japan. This is no wonder, as 70% of the country consists of mountainous areas, which means that Japan is dotted with amazing hiking opportunities. Note: Kamikochi is open from mid/late April until November 15 and shuts down during winter. In 2021, Kamikochi is scheduled to be open from April 17 to November 15. By public transportation: one of the easiest ways to get to Kamikochi from Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto is by taking a direct bus. A one way trip from Tokyo takes 5-7 hours and costs ¥6,000 ~ ¥10,000. You cna board the bus to Kamikochi at several places in Tokyo, including Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo Staion. Online reservations are recommended, especially in the summer holidays and in the koyo season.

Kamikochi is surprisingly accessible and relatively “low effort” for a tourist to enjoy the full majesty of nature. Taking the Alpico bus from Matsumoto Station to Taisho Pond takes about 1.5hr and you can start the leisurely trek upwards, or simply continue riding the bus all the way to Kamikochi bus terminal where it is bustling with food shop and the amazing view from the Kappa Bridge. Kamikochi (上高地, Kamikōchi) is a popular resort in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, offering some of Japan's most spectacular mountain scenery Getting There - By bus from Tokyo Alpico operates daytime and overnight highway buses between Tokyo (Tokyo Station, Shinjuku) and Kamikochi. The one way trip takes 5-7 hours and costs around 6000 to 8000 yen. Online reservations can be made through Willer. There are also some tour packages during summer for this place from different Tour agents in Japan. Located in the birthplace of the Japanese Alps, Kamikochi offers breathtaking views and access to your next adventure. The natural history of Kamikochi is one of great elemental upheavals occurring over many thousands of years, though some of these were also quite recent. The mountains and valleys were shaped in part by glacial activity, evidence of which can still be seen in some of the most prominent peaks. Another major player in the formation of the area was Mt. Yakedake, whose eruption over 14,000 years ago changed the course of the Azusa River, causing it to run through the basin in which present day Kamikochi and Matsumoto are located. Mt. Yakedake would again play a role in shaping Kamikochi’s landscape when another eru#asia tion in the summer of 1915 dammed the Azusa River, creating Taisho Pond. It should be mentioned that Mt. One of the most beautiful places i have been to. It’s not really on the main path for most foreigners visiting Japan, but its definitely worth visiting! These are my favorite pictures from my entire two week Japan trip.

Today, I will share the ways to travel from the city of Matsumoto to Kamikochi. Since I stayed in Matsumoto for one night, there are two ways to get to Kamikochi. 1. Travel by bus from Matsumoto to Kamikochi (There are only two rounds, at 05:30 and 10:30 AM) in the year 2023. 2. Take a train and then a bus (I chose this method because it's a bit late). I started my journey around 7 AM, taking the train at JR Matsumoto Station on the Kamikochi Line to Shin-shima shima Station, which takes about 30 minutes. Upon arriving at Shin-shima shima Station, I bought a bus ticket to go up to Kamikochi National Park, which takes about an hour. Along the way, you will see dams and lush green nature, very beautiful. For the return trip, just walk to the Kamikochi bus station to buy a ticket back to Shin-shima shima to return to Matsumoto.

#fallishere Kamikochi has so much charm to amaze us in every season and will make you want to come back again. Came here during early November and the foliage was spectacular. Every turn, every corner and every sight felt so lyrical and poetic. The river was turquoise and the Japanese larch trees were tinted in an autumn golden vibes. It is a good forest for hiking. The view is very beautiful & the air is cool and fresh. Better to spend a night and walk around to visit all spots. Family friendly place. The only downside is it gets relatively crowded at Kappa Bridge later in the day.

I camped in Kamikochi for four days, and every day was sunny! Red leaves🍁, yellow leaves🍂, snow mountains🏔️, blue sky☀️, it's really beautiful! The 5-day hiking route I personally think is very easy (although we are heavily equipped!) But there is plenty of time, you can have time to set up tents, cook, take pictures, and daze! Play very loosely~ Next time I want to summit the snow mountain, buy good equipment and train well before fighting again!
