There’s a popular site in Nanjing that requires your attention when you visit the city. The Zhanyuan garden, or Zhan garden, originates from Ming dynasty, when the emperor gave it to his minister Xuda as royal gift. This garden is one of the most famous gardens in China, recognized as scenic spot of national importance.
This garden complex includes over 20 garden spots, and holds the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom history museum (east side), as Zhanyuan became the residence of Taiping rebellion leaders when Nanjing was established as the capital of China.
My favorite area of Zhanyuan was by the the west side, walking around the pavilions, admiring the rockeries and water pools. The general ambience of the site provides a peaceful and refreshing trip. One not ceases to wonder how this complex could retain so much of its original layout despite the conflictive times it endured.
Opening hours: 8am to 9pm. Night performances are very popular, which increases entrance fee from 30 to 70 RMB.

The city of Nanjing is also diverse in temperament. Not only the emperor's temperament of the tiger's dragon plate, but also the warmth of the Xiaojiabiyu style. There is an authentic Jiangnan garden in the city center near the Confucius Temple.
Zhanyuan is the most complete classical garden in Nanjing. Although it is located in the city center, it is very low-key and there are not many tourists. Perhaps tourists do not know the existence of this garden. Zhanyuan has existed for more than 600 years.
This garden is also related to Zhu Yuanzhang. Before Zhu Yuanzhang was enthroned in Nanjing, the garden was Wu Wangfu. Later, Zhu Yuanzhang gave the garden the most proud general Xu Da. Since Xu Da was sealed as the Zhongshan King, the garden became the Zhongshan Palace. However, the Zhongshan Palace at that time was larger, and Zhanyuan was only part of it.
Zhanyuan is the only open Ming Dynasty palace in Nanjing, with a charming autumn landscape. In the days of late autumn and early winter, the temperature in the south of the Yangtze River is not very cold, the leaves are yellow, the leaves are falling, and the scenery is everywhere.
In the Qing Dynasty, Zhanyuan became the office of Jiangnan Buzheng. Jiangnan Province in the early Qing Dynasty was roughly equivalent to today's Jiangsu, Anhui, and Jiangxi provinces plus Shanghai. It was the most prosperous and affluent area in the country at that time. Because it was too rich, it caused the court to be vigilant and was later split into Jiangsu Province and Anhui Province.
Zhanyuan is located near Qinhuai, the Confucius Temple in Qinhuai District, Nanjing. It is the oldest classical garden in the Ming Dynasty in Nanjing. It is also the four famous gardens in the south of the Yangtze River. The garden after the snow is even more beautiful. On the stone lion, the tiles are covered with snow, and the trees that seem to be lonely on both sides reflect each other. There is a kind of beauty in the snow.
Walking in the garden, I never walked according to the guide map, and left the door and was attracted by a corner. Red wooden doors, white walls, rockeries, everything seems to be just right, this time wearing a red cloak, you can take a long time photo.
Zhan Garden was built in the Jiajing Period of the Ming Dynasty. It was originally the palace of Xu Da, a hero of the Ming Dynasty. It is a long-standing historical garden in Nanjing. It has a history of more than 600 years. Together with Wuxi's Jichang Garden, Suzhou's Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lingering Garden, they are known as "the four famous gardens of Jiangnan." Zhan Garden is divided into two sections, the East and the West. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Historical Museum is the main tourist spot of the East Zhan Garden. The West Zhan Garden is a typical Jiangnan garden. The ancient buildings in the park contain galleries, flower baskets and winding corridors. These buildings and winding corridors divide the West Zhan Garden into five smaller courtyards and a main garden, while the artificial mountain serves as the main scene and backbone of the whole garden.
