The Great Temple

5/5
1 Reviews
Historical Site
Address: Petra - Wadi Musa, Jordan

What people are saying:

After leaving the church, I would climb to a high slope, where I sat in a small canopy for 5 minutes, adjusted my rest, drank a cup of hot "mint black tea", and continued on my way down. Going down to the magnificent The Great Temple of Petra-the largest and magnificent grand palace. From the photo below, you can see the royal tombs and the Palace at the time of arrival, as well as the Great Temle and the direction of the access road to the monastery. The Great Temple was first discovered by Brünnow and von Domaszewski, but Bachmann finally identified the existence of the Great Temple in his Petra city plan. At the same time, there is also the column street on the southern slope. In view of his assumptions about the existence of the Great Temple area and the importance of this assumption in understanding Petra's architectural and human history, the excavation of the site in 1993 established its remarkable achievement.

    Temple of Your Dreams

Opposite the Byzantine Church along the main road this is a rather large temple and very much worth walking though (like everything in Petra).

The Nabateans built this major colonnaded complex in the 1st century BC. It stood 60 ft (18 m) high in its glory days before it was badly damaged by an earthquake. It likely had a multitude of uses al...

Unfortunately it is all ruined, yet you can simply go by it just before you reach the Basilica so you can't miss it

    Wonderful!

The great temple is another of the great sites as you walk up from the Treasury building further into Petra. This is in the area of the ‘town centre’.

    Partially restored ruin

A large temple complex on the way to the Monastery. In my opinion, best views from the ruins of the Winged Lion temple (up the hill opposite) -- one gets a good overall view.
