Ayutthaya is a sacred city, a city that has been looted, and it has been entangled intricately with Thai nationalism and religion. As the former royal capital, Ayutthaya has enabled emerging Thailand to gain a position in the Southeast Asian empire and to find its place in the map used by international traders between India and China during the trade boom. As a city destroyed by the invaders, the great city is respected like a sacrificial hero. But what has been mentioned in history and legend has been difficult to recognize today. Some ancient landmarks have maintained a little glory in a little identifiable way. Dacheng has more than 400 temples. The largest temple concentration is the Ayutthaya Historical Park, which was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There used to be a memorial temple, but there are a row of topless columns and sagging steps that lead to an infinite reverie. Almost no Buddha statue was preserved intact: According to some records, the heads of most Buddha statues were cut down by the invaders and sold to foreign antique collectors. The historical records of the temples have gradually disappeared and mixed with local legends, so that it is impossible to accurately calculate the period of construction of the temple.
