The capital of the Thai Ayutthaya Dynasty, with over 600 years of palace ruins and more than 200 preserved ancient pagodas.
Ayutthaya, with its ancient and dreamy name, was once the capital of the prosperous Ayutthaya Kingdom in Thailand for over 600 years, serving as the political and economic center of the longest-lasting dynasty in Thai history. Despite centuries of wind and rain erosion and war destruction, the ruins of this ancient city have been preserved to this day. Known as the "Ancient Rome of Thailand" and comparable to Xi'an in China and Bagan in Myanmar, Ayutthaya is home to numerous palace, temple, and pagoda ruins that continue the legacy of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
Located north of the capital city of Bangkok, Dachengfu was once the most glorious capital city in Thai history, but now it is rarely visited by tourists, and it is full of unfamiliarity with this fallen royal capital. Upon entering Dachengfu, the signs of Ayutthaya can be seen everywhere, and the glorious history of the Dacheng Dynasty is still engraved in every corner of the city. In 1350, King Uthong established the Ayutthaya Dynasty here, later annexing Sukhothai, and was known as the Dacheng Dynasty, which lasted for 417 years before being invaded and destroyed by Myanmar.
With the changes of history, the capital of Thailand moved southward, and Ayutthaya lost its glorious status, becoming a small city in the north of Bangkok, named Ayutthaya Province. However, history has left Ayutthaya with a rich cultural heritage of architecture, including the Ayutthaya Historical Park standing in the city center, the millennium-old Wat Mahathat, the cliff-top Wat Chaiwatthanaram, the Wat Phra Ram, and the ancient Buddhist pagodas that occasionally appear in the center of the city's roads, all telling the extraordinary history of Ayutthaya.
The Mahathat Temple, as a landmark of the ancient city ruins, stands in the center of the city. The temple was built during the Sukhothai period, and the main tower of Mahathat is a typical Sukhothai-style Buddhist stupa with a lotus-shaped spire. It is built entirely of red clay and resembles a lotus bud waiting to bloom, standing in the center of the ancient city for more than 700 years.
In the ancient city ruins area, you can still see the broken walls of the ancient city walls, and the square foundations of the brick-paved ground can still reveal the architectural layout of the ancient city palace and temple. The intact ancient city wall protects the remains of the large city for more than 700 years. Walking through it, the ancient charm and glory of the Great City Dynasty still shine.

The city of Ayutthaya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the site’s architecture, art, and urban development. It is also currently protected by Thai law under the Act on Ancient monuments, Antiques, Objects of Art and National Museums. The city of Ayutthaya and its modern development have left the temples scattered between residential and commercial buildings, so there is currently an effort to expand the boundaries of the historical park to protect the remaining temples and ruins. The temples are still visited today by many, and there are several tours that advertise river views of many of the temples.
