The Canal Saint-Martin neighborhood in northeastern Paris is one of the most tranquil and picturesque spots the city has to offer. It also has some excellent shops, restaurants and coffee bars - head to any of Kraft, Ten Belles, Bob's Juice, The Sunken Chip and make sure you head to the best bakery in Paris, Du Pains et Des Idées (n.b. it's shut at the weekend).
Locals, artists and musician, and all around the canal, nice shops and great restaurants and cocktails bars. Hipster place #1 in Paris!
THIS is a local place, where Parisians hangout, especially during spring and summer with a bottle of wine or beers to enjoy a picnic along the canal. Forget all the touristy places and enjoy the real Paris like locals
For a very laid-back picnic spot I recommend Canal Saint-Martin. Starting at metro République level and moving northwards, you will cross many cafés and take-away lunch spots, at least one person playing acoustic guitar and Jardin Villemin (for those who prefer a grassy enclosed area that is safer for kids). Further along, the Canal turns into Bassin de la Villette. This is where everyone plays “pétanque” in the evening and where I gather with friends for picnics before heading to one of the bars or nightclubs nearby.
