Ashmolean Museum Review

it’s definitely one of my favorite art museums in the UK, not only for its great collections but also the exhibition designs.

Thoroughly enjoyed our time at this Oxford city centre museum with a large eclectic collection ranging from European Pottery & Porcelain to Egyptian Mummies to local finds of ancient coins. A very spacious basement cafe allowed for safe social distancing. Sorry we booked too late to see the Young Rembrant exhibition but apparently it was superb.

The Ashmolean Museum is the oldest museum in Oxford and the oldest museum in the UK. The exterior of the museum is a typical classical architectural style. The interior space is not particularly large. This is also limited by early architectural technology. The exhibits are definitely incomparable to the British Museum, but there are also precious items that are not long-standing, and entering the museum is free.

This is a free museum. There is a donation box at the entrance of the museum, marked with the words 5, which means that visitors are expected to pledge. The museum's map brochure is also marked with the words 1, which requires conscious payment. The museum is known as the second largest museum in Britain besides the British Museum and was originally purely a private collection. Later, after winning the ownership of the collection, the man named Ashmolin presented it to Oxford University. Oxford University established the first university museum in world history in 1683. Today it is the oldest public museum in Britain, and of course the most important of the four university museums in Oxford. The whole museum is a four-storey exhibition hall, with different categories of exhibition hall doors and doors. It's hard not to miss the exhibition hall without maps when visiting this museum. Fortunately, we basically have no definite goal. First, through the corridor of the statue display, we enter the Egyptian exhibition hall, where many of the ancient Egyptian collections are said to be abundant in the British Museum in London. We saw ancient sculptures, whole walls being moved back to the British Empire, and the madness of looting at that time was evident. Of course, it may be because of the plunder of those years that the precious cultural relics of today are well preserved. The mummies stored here are also said to be exquisite and good. Of course, there are many unearthed cultural relics such as pottery. In addition to Egypt, there are India, Greece and the Aegean Sea; in addition to ancient and modern art collections, there are also unearthed cultural relics and folk art. Among the collections from China, besides porcelain, bronze and other cultural relics, there are also large-scale famous paintings, and even cigarette boxes depicting the faces of Peking Opera. There is also a picture written on the wall in 1983, on which are four Chinese characters "Endeavour to Strong", among which the strong characters are "Xinjiang" without earthen characters. Such a painting and calligraphy hanging in such an exotic Museum seems a bit out of line. In addition to collections exhibited according to the age of the country, there are also classified exhibition halls, including coin collection, violin, glass and ceramics, precious metal crafts and other exhibition halls have a wealth of collection exhibits. In the coin collection exhibition hall, we can see the coins of ancient China, as well as the coins of India, Greece, Rome, Islam, Britain and the European Union and many other countries and regions. In the exhibition hall, we are the first to see Indian traditional paintings. Although they are elegant animal paintings, exaggerated brush strokes with coordinated colors still leave some impressions. Unknowingly, after visiting the Ashmolin Museum for three hours, it was just a walking tour. The collection in the museum was really rich.

Free, one of Oxford University museums. The collection is rich, and many of them are in Egypt, China, India and other countries. It is the first museum in the UK to open to the public. Its size is the second in the UK, after the British Museum, known as the reduced version of the British Museum. There are also some children in the hall. It is recommended to play for two hours. After all, there are many places worth seeing at Oxford University!
