The temple of Baalbek is in Lebanon, near the eastern part of Syria, and this magnificent building was built during the ancient Roman period, with huge stone pillars and exquisite carvings. The eastern and southern part of the country is the Hizbullah sphere of influence, with countless roadblocks and soldiers checkpoints along the way, and the civil war of the 1970s and 1980s, and the conflict with Israel, which has lagged significantly behind the north-west, with a wide range of Lebanese sects, nearly half of the population Christian, and a high degree of Westernization.
