Ban Josip Jelačić Statue Review

Born in 1801, Jelaić served in the army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was the first Governor of Croatia in 1848 and 1859, a symbol of the struggle for independence in the hearts of the Croatian people. The statue of Governor Jelaić on horseback was erected in the Governor's Square in 1866. After World War II, the square was renamed and the statue of the governor was replaced by a guerrilla statue. After Croatia's independence in 1991, the statue of the governor of Jelaić was moved back to the square.
