Dr. Bethune's former residence in Gravenhurst, 170 kilometers north of Toronto, has been listed as Canada's national cultural heritage. Bethune, whose full name is Henry Norman Bethune, is a well-known thoracic surgeon in Canada. He went to China in 1938 to work in battlefield medical treatment for the anti-Japanese war. The next year, he died of wound infection. Bethune is well known in China. Most of the visitors who come to visit Bethune's former residence and memorial hall are Chinese tourists.
