Amsterdam's oldest surviving gay bar was opened way back in 1927 at the heart of the city on the famous Zeedijk by a hard-drinking, motorcycle-riding local lesbian named Bet van Beeren, and remained one of the city's most popular hangouts for gays and lesbians (and sailors and artists and lookie-loos) for half a century. In 2008 Bet's niece reopened the long dormant little pub, which with its oodles of memorabilia has a rather museum-y feel. Now attracting a mostly older crowd but welcoming of everyone, it's once again is one of the neighborhood's gay mainstays.
