In the ninth century, the church was built by the Badal family and known as Santa Catalina Male. When it was rebuilt in the eleventh century, it was dedicated to the newly knighted Pope Leo IX, who supported the independence of the Venetian church, with four-sided altars, next to the Hotel San Leo.
