Child Eater Fountain (Kindlifresserbrunnen) Review

A pool of crystal clear spring water, a column decorated with exquisite sculptures, is a long memorial, such a scene is everywhere in the old Bern city, or stands in the center of the small square, or the tree in the center of the main road, forming a unique beautiful scenery. Among the many fountains, the most exquisite and complicated is the Shitong Fountain. The fountain built in 1545-1546 is erected in front of the granary square on the north side of the bell tower. It is said that because children often stumbled and fell into the nearby deep ditch a long time ago, a striking fountain was built to warn bear children to be cautious. At the top of the fountain column, a sitting ogre is devouring children, and many innocent children are scattered around the ogre's surroundings and feet, in a realistic form and very scared to think about it. At the bottom of the column, there is a circle of well-behaved bears symbolized by Bern. Finding the 11 children in the sculpture is a task of examining eyesight.

Personally, I am neither concerned nor sad about the theme of this fountain, but I see it as a fairy tale portrayal. We have all read stories of evil witches eating children, or evil wolves, giants, etc. This fountain is more like a fairy tale if you will. I found it interesting and was glad I had read it before we went to Bern to put it on the must-see website list.

Children's fountain is not really a fountain to eat people, but because in the past, children often drowned and drowned near the fountain. So someone designed this fountain to frighten children, saying that there are monsters to eat people and keep children away.

This sculpture fountain is located in the centre of the old city of Bern, a little bit off the main street, and it is usually not missed. Legend is a way used by people here to frighten disobedient children. Haha, maybe the story itself is legend.

When passing through the Bell Tower in Bern, you can see the child-eater fountain. The figure on it is said to be Jewish, because in the Middle Ages, Jews ate children widely in Europe. But the fountain's shape is very gorgeous. At first glance, it feels very beautiful. It's not terrible at all. But when you look at the sculptures carefully, you will feel how terrible the ferocious-looking demons are.
