The walls of Carcassonne are a fine design of ancient European defense architecture, nearly ten miles long, divided into two layers inside and outside, relatively independent of each other. The outer side is obviously relatively low, but I don't quite understand why European castles don't dig moats. The real center of defense seems to be the second floor, including towers and so on. The biggest purpose of the first floor seems to be to limit the attacking forces.
