In 1529, a plague struck and the inhabitants died. The old town perfectly preserved the style of the 16th century Venetian town. The island is home to numerous vineyards, olive groves and small villages. The town of Korchula is the main residence for the islanders. Built by the sea, the town boasts marble streets, Renaissance and Gothic buildings.
