Buenos Aires was an important cultural and political center of Spain's early colonial period, and many colonial buildings were preserved, including Roman cathedrals and museums. It even preserved the tunnels dug by the Spanish colonists in revolt against the enemy, and the colonies of Italian immigrants on the south coast of the city.
