Located on the Koyao Plateau at the border of Bolivia and Peru, Lake Titicaca is the highest and largest freshwater lake in South America. It is also one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. It is also the largest navigable Lake in the world, and the third largest lake in South America (after Lake Maracaibo and Lake Pattos). Lake Titicaca is Lago Titicaca in Spanish. The name of Lake Titicaca on the floating island of the lake originates from the native Indian language. It may mean "the cliff of the leopard" or "the cliff of the chieftain". There are different translations of Rock of the Puma or Crag of Lead. There are 52 islands in the lake, most of which are inhabited. The largest island, Titicaca, has the site of an Inca-era temple and is also the sacred lake of the Indians. (1)
