Lake of Midwest of South Island, New Zealand. Located in the foothills of Shandong, South Alps, at an altitude of 280 meters (915 feet). The area is 192 square kilometers (74 square miles). The basin area is 2,543 square kilometers (982 square miles). It is a glacier-filled lake. The deepest point may be more than 300 meters (1,000 feet), with rivers such as Makarora injected into the Clutha River, and sluices at the exit to regulate the water level and generate electricity. The town of Wanaka at the Hunan end is the center of the tourist area.
