Obelisk of III. Tutmosis Review

This very beautiful obelisk is in the center on the Sultanamet District only a short walk from the main square. The obelisk taken from Egypt marked on end of the chariot course that use to stand here.

The obelisk itself is impressive enough, but reading its history will make you appreciate it even more. Very cool location in the ancient hippodrome, surrounded by cute souvenir shops.

The Obelisk of Theodosius is the Ancient Egyptian obelisk of Pharaoh Tutmoses III, which was re-erected in the Hippodrome of Constantinople (known today as At Meydanı or Sultanahmet Meydanı, in Istanbul) by the Roman emperor Theodosius I in the 4th century AD.

The obelisk is nice, but not very different from other obelisks. But I like the Hippodrom, with it's flowers everywhere and the nice atmosphere.

The Hippodrome is a bit of a disappointing attraction in Istanbul. It used to be the chariot race course and the beating heart of Constaninople. Today it's simply a plaza with a few random ruins. The Obelisk of Theodosius looks like every other obelisk. The Serpent Column would be cool if its heads were still attached. I think my favorite part of the hippodrome is the German fountain and the proximity to Sultanahmet Mosque. The square is also directly adjacent to the Islamic Art Museum, which is definitely worth seeing.
