Santa Maria Novella is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. Dominican friars started making herbal remedies in the 13th century and the pharmacy was opened to the public in 1612. Visitors can still see the original pharmacy with is wonderful frescoes, the 1848 salesroom and the old pharmacy waiting room. The scents, eau de colognes, soaps and creams are made with centuries’ old recipes and are available for purchase. Catherine of Medici was a loyal customer!
