The square was the site of the ancient Roman Forum and remained a marketplace and meeting place in the Middle Ages. It now looks like it was developed during a brief period when Florence was declared the capital in the 19th century. Many buildings, towers and monuments have been demolished or relocated to provide space for a new central square.
