Oakland Bay Bridge is our less pretty grand bridge in the Bay. Connecting Oakland with San Francisco, the double-decker bridge is as intimidating as it is awe-inspiring. An eyeful of gray is what you’ll get when you see it up close. Compared to the vibrant Golden Gate Bridge, it certainly seems less appealing. However, this bridge serves its purpose well, connecting with Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island along the way. Currently under renovation, the older section of the bridge was shifted to connect with a new addition, allowing construction workers to build while keeping the roadways functional. The effort is ambitious and the costs keep increasing, making this a real trial for the planners in charge. When you’ve been away from San Francisco for awhile, there’s nothing quite like driving back on the top level of the Bay Bridge at night, while being welcomed by the downtown city lights ahead.
