Parliament Square is not only the center of Helsinki citizens'activities, but also the best place to appreciate neoclassical architecture. It is regarded as an important landmark of Finland. At the center of the square is a bronze statue of Czar Alexander II, which was sculpted in 1894 to commemorate the full autonomy he gave Finland. Standing on the square, you can see three masterpieces by the architect Engel: the cathedral, the government building and the University of Helsinki. In the long summer days, the square is often a venue for open-air concerts and other performances.
