Trinity is a church dedicated to the Anglican community of the British diaspora. A small church was built in 1847. After the original church was in disrepair, the cathedral was rebuilt from 1866 to 1869 with the design of reference architect George Gilbert Scott (George Gilbert Scott 1811-1878), which was neo-Gothic and was the largest and most gorgeous Christian church in Shanghai in the early days. In 1875 the church was upgraded to the Anglican Diocese of North China, and in 1893 the towering bell tower was built on the left side of the church
