The Cathedral of Notre Dame's Innocence was founded in 1842 on Wellington Street in Central. The church was destroyed by fire and was sold to businesses in 1886 and demolished. The existing Notre Dame Innocence Cathedral was purchased in 1881, laid the cornerstone in 1883 and completed in 1888. The first sacrifice was held on the eve of Notre Dame's Innocence Day on December 7, 1888. The cost of the cathedral was HK$120,000 at that time. Over the years, after many renovations, stained glass windows were added to the hall in 1923. During World War II, a Japanese artillery shell destroyed a stone pillar behind the church on December 12, 1941. After the war, in the 1950s the church built steeple in the centre and large cross on the top, while the portico facing the main road on the side of the church was demolished in the 1970s when the parish centre was built. In the year of Notre Dame in 1954, Catholic students in Hong Kong donated money to buy a woodcut statue of the innocent Virgin, which is now on the central wall of the church. In 1985, stained glass windows were added. Hong Kong Post introduced commemorative stamps to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the building's completion in 1988.
