The former residence of Marshal Zhang Xueliang where he was placed under house arrest by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek after the Xian Incident of 1936 is now an upmarket restaurant. A friend recommended the place. The set lunch costs 1500 NTD plus ten. Consisting of eight courses with a mix of soup, meat, fish, organic vegetables and desert, the food is fine, well presented but not exceptional. What sets it apart is of course the beauty of the place and the vivid sense of history and pathos that anybody interested in Chinese history would feel. Had it not been for Zhang's daring act, the CCP might have been liquidated by the KMT. The place is also a celebration of love and sacrifice - Zhang's wife shared his imprisonment of 50 years. Not a grand residence, the house is well preserved. During WWII, the place was the R&R station where comfort women entertained the kamikaze pilots before their suicidal missions. All has come to pass. Now guests can enjoy a good meal, drink afternoon tea, walk in the pretty gardens, take a foot bath, or relax in the hot spring in private rooms. There is even a bus bound for the Yangming Shan National Park outside its gate. Even though access maybe a bit of a problem, visitors can book a free ride from the MRT station. We greatly enjoyed our afternoon in this place of history.
