Santa Teresa is located on the top of the Santa Teresa hill, and it is famous for its winding and narrow streets. The neighborhood came to be around the Santa Teresa Convent which was built in the 1750's on the Desterro hill. As the 19th century came to a close, it became an area for the upper class. It became covered by its numerous mansions, many of which are still standing on the hill.
