The history of the Capitoline Museums can be traced back to 1471, at that time Pope Sixtus IV donated a precious bronze statue to the people of Rome, which was temporarily stored on Capitoline Hill. It was Michelangelo who carried out the design and renovation of these 3 buildings, as the buildings were completed one by one, donated works were placed in the buildings, as a museum open to the public. Later, Ancient Roman statues, inscriptions, coins, drawings, and other precious objects were continuously collected and were placed on exhibition in the museum. The current building was designed by Michelangelo, and has been in existence for 400 years. The museum is divided into 3 buildings and displays a large quantity of Roman statues, inscriptions, as well as Medieval and Renaissance era gems, coins, paintings, and more. Many of these are priceless treasures. The greatest treasure of the museum is the She-Wolf bronze statue that was made by the Etruscans before the 5th century BCE, and since 1473 has always been kept in the Palazzo dei Conservatori collection. The twins beneath the She-Wolf were added by the Renaissance Italian sculptor Antonio del Pollaiolo, this composite statue has become the symbol of the city of Rome.
