Rottnest Island is a small island off the coast of Western Australia, not far off from Perth, one of the most isolated major cities in the world. Rottnest was named by the Dutch, who upon seeing the little marsupials that live only here, the Quokkas, mistaken them for rats (rotts in Dutch). The island is a great day trip to ferry over, rent bicycles, and then bike around the island for a unique and beautiful ride, taking in all the natural beauty and if you are lucky, seeing a Quokka. There are facilities at the ferry point to eat and relax after a great day on the island.
One of my favourite places in Western Australia, I love that it's a quick trip from Perth and once you're there it's peaceful and calm. Best to stay overnight rather than just do a day trip, because the real calm happens once the last ferry goes and the day trippers are gone.
This gem of an Island is amazing. After taking the ferry across from the mainland you arrive at a cross between a quaint east coach beach town combined with the rugged outdoors of the California central coast. Great swimming, diving and all water activities as well as fun biking around the Island. Worth the trip out if you are in Perth for 4+ days.
Loved Rottnest Island! Definitely the highlight of my trip to Perth. I would recommend hiring a bike and going snorkeling.
It's a beautiful place and lots of fun. Must rent a cycle !
A short boat ride to this island sees you snorkeling in sheltered bays, fishing, munching on a pastry from the bakery, or sharing a jug of beer with friends whilst listening to the band play. No cars on the island except emergency services, and utility vehicles, with the exception of a bus that does pick up and drop offs round the island. Hire a bike and find your own private spot.
Went on a Tuesday so it was cheaper really good day with a lot of cycling and lovely beaches.
