I am from South India, the home of Masala Dosa, so I was intrigued to see a restaurant with this name near the Golden Gate Park. Stepped in to taste. It is a small place. There is a fair choice of Indian cuisine, from both south and North India. I tried the masala dosa. It is pretty good. Dosa is a thin pancake sort of thing made of a batter of rice and another seed, which are ground separately and then mixed together. The mixture is spread on a hot griddle. A potato mix (the masala), is placed in the centre and the dosa rolled over it. It is served with various sauces. In this restaurant they served a tomato sauce and a coriander sauce. One can get dosas without the masala too. The masala is the spicy part.
3 hungry friends after a long walk in Golden Gate park found ourselves in this restaurant around 3:45 PM. We ordered lamb rogan josh, chicken tikka masala and vegetable biryani. Chicken tikka masala was pieces of chicken (not thoroughly cooked) floating in a very thin masala. Very flavorless. The lamb dish was not impressive at all. The biryani was the highlight of the orders and thank god the portion was enough for 3 of us. Service was inattentive. He forgot a spoon and put a tea spoon in the rice dish! (How am i supposed to serve rice with a teaspoon? Maybe a good tool to control your carb intake). We had to ask for water each time and even though there were 2 tables filled at the time- he got us a doggies bag (which was actually for the table next to us).
