Jinling East Road was built by the French in 1865 and used gas lamps as street lamps, which were relatively advanced in China at the time. In October 1943, it was renamed Jinling Road. In December 1945, it was changed to its current name. But until the founding of the People's Republic of China, ordinary citizens generally used to call it "the main road of law". Jinling East Road was the political and economic center of the French Concession. After liberation, Jinling East Road became the fourth commercial street in Shanghai.
