Waitanyuan is located at the northern end of the Bund, near Waibaudu Bridge and Suzhou Creek. The building used to house the British Consulate General in Shanghai. The current structure, which has been well-preserved, dates to a reconstruction in 1872. It uses an English renaissance architectural style, with a typical English garden at the front of the building. The roof is western style, with four slopes, using small Chinese-style tiles. Today, the building and gardens are owned and operated by the Shanghai Peninsula Hotel.
