Shiretokogo Lake Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
A well managed forest and lake section of the Shiretoko National Park. Managed parking for 500 yen, sign in for the hour long wander around the lakes area on well defined path.
First up is a good ranger talk, mandatory, about bears and sightings and what to do and not to do. Good English language version.
Had rained overnight, so plenty of opportunity to get mud on your boots for an authentic look of a forest tramp.
Lakes are scenic, and the final portion of the track is a raised boardwalk. This had electric edging to prevent any bear incursions.
The round the lake walk attracted a small fee. If you just wanted to do the raised boardwalk that was free.
We did not saw bears but did find deer happily dining on the local vegetation. From the board walk there were great views back to the mountains and across too the Ohkohsk sea.

Shiretoko Sightseeing Ship "Aurora" Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
One of the reasons why Shiretoko was landed as a World Heritage Site is that it has a biological network that allows rare animals to survive, covering the sea, rivers and land. If you want to see wild animals, but because it is inconvenient to bring the baby or do not want to walk in the snow for a long time, you can participate in the Winter Wildlife Observatory, sit in the car and explore the outside world through the window.
The whole journey takes about one and a half hours. The guide will send a telescope to everyone for easy observation and a brief introduction while driving. The windows are generally open, but still warmer than outdoors. Can you see the animal depends on your eyes and luck? The squid is more common, and you can see the footprint of the fox. As for the brown bear, can you see it? The guide said that there are two hundred bears here, 90% of them are hibernating, but some are active.
Return time is still relatively early, the guide special zone to see the waterfall (also known as Shuangmei Waterfall). Along the way, the clouds on the sea surface are quite low, as if the world is coming, the momentum is amazing.

A famous spot for watching the sunset sink into the Sea of Okhotsk. I visited during the winter drift ice season.
