Nantou Ancient Town has a very long history stretching all the way back to 331 CE. It was once a coastal defense fortress and gatekeeper of the Pearl River. It was the capital of Dongguan Prefecture, which once included the areas of present-day Shenzhen, Huizhou, Hong Kong and Macau. Today’s ancient town has southern and eastern city gates, with historical sites such as Wentianxiang Temple, Guandi Temple and Xin’an Tobacco Museum nestled among the houses lining of the town. There is also a Nantou Ancient Town Museum just outside the South Gate where visitors can see a number of cultural relics over the span of many dynasties.
