Singapore’s Central Area (financial district) is located on the south bank of the Singapore Island. As it is only 719 square kilometers in surface area, the country does not have administrative divisions like province, city, county and township. Shenton Way is the main avenue running through the Central Area. You’ll find high rises along both sides. The adjacent Keppel Harbor is one of the busiest ports in the world. The Singapore River cruises along the metropolitan area. On the 2 sides of the river banks you’ll find areas where immigrants first moved in years ago. This entire strip is bustling with commercial activity and is the economic pulse of the older part of Singapore. At the opening of the river, you will find an off-white statue depicting the Merlion. This is a spiritual icon and landmark for Singapore.
