In the 12th and 13th centuries, Kelder was the manor of the Oddi clan, one of Iceland's most powerful clans, and Jón Loftsson (1124-1197) was their chief, living in Keldur until his death in 1197. Keldur is one of only a handful of protected lawn houses in South Iceland and is now a museum. The National Museum of Iceland bought the old lawn farm in 1942 and the farmhouse is part of the National Museum's collection of historic buildings. The interior of the museum can be visited.
