Turku Castle Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Turku Castle
Well, this one is a plain obvious destination to write of. It’s probably the most often visited tourist attractions in the city of Turku, southwestern Finland.
The medieval castle was built during the 13th century. The castle served as a bastion and administrative centre in Eastland, as Finland was during that time a province of Sweden. Only once did the castle figure in the defence, when Russian invaders from Novgorod destroyed Turku in 1318. It more frequently played a role in internal struggles for power within Sweden and the Kalmar Union. The castle's bloom was in the mid-16th century during the reign of Duke John of Finland and Catherine Jagellon. That was when the Renaissance Floor and King's and Queen's hall were built, along with other features. It lost its status as an administrative centre in the 17th century after Per Brahe's period as governor-general of Finland came to an end. Turku castle is today Finland's most visited museum, with some 200,000 visitors a year.
The castle has been kept in an excellent condition and it indeed offers visitors many different possibilities. That time I personally visited the chapel because I took part in a wedding ceremony.
There are tours inside the castle but there’s also very nice public space inside. You don’t necessarily need to buy a ticket to enjoy of the castle. I personally think that no matter where you go, inside those thick walls there’s another world.
Turku Castle is situated near the passenger harbor. You can drive there by car or use public transportation. The distance to the city center is about 3 km and the local bus line number 1 stops besides the castle.

Finland is a beautiful Nordic country. The capital, Helsinki, is the largest city in the country and is well known internationally. The history of Helsinki is not too long. Before Helsinki, another city was the capital of Finland and it has now become a small town.
This city is called Turku, located on the southwest coast of Finland, close to Sweden and has been the capital of Finland until 1812. Turku was originally developed by the castle built by the Swedes. The city was established in 1229 and is the oldest city in the country with a population of 180,000.
In the 14th century, there were only seven cities in Finland, and Turku was the largest and most important city. The Turku Castle and the Turku Cathedral were established in the 13th century, and the first university in Finland, Turku University, was also built here.
Finland eventually moved to Helsinki, originating from the Russian and Swedish competition for Finland. In 1809, Russia began to rule Finland, when Turku was still the capital of Finland, but three years later, the capital went to Helsinki, which is closer to Russia.
Turku has many monuments and is an important tourist city in Finland. The most famous are the castles and cathedrals of Turku left over from the Middle Ages.

.An absolute dream place to stay with pets. We travel with our dog and here she was treated as a true VIP guest. We were so surprised, because a lot of times dogs are not allowed nor noticed in hotels. All the staff were very helpful and the room was very nice and beds comfortable. Everything you need for a stay in Turku!
The location was perfect beside the river. Underground parking was ok. The room was otherwise very nice but the toilet looked older than the rest of the room. Friendly staff and superb breakfast with custom made omelettes. You can also rent hotel's bikes for free.

Gym is really good, huge, clean and bunch of machines!

Rooms are ok, missing some tea machine and fridge, but are clean, big and organized!
Kupittaa Park Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Ice Skating in Turku, Finland
Ice skating in Turku at a place called Kupittaa Park is incredible. It’s a long track outdoors with plenty of space.
Skate hire is 6 euros. It is open from 5pm-8pm so you have 3 hours but depending on your skill level and how long you want to be out in the cold you might not need 3 hours.
