Photos of Riddarholmen

During the mighty years of Sweden in the 17th century, it was the place where powerful knights and nobles lived. The buildings on the island are quaint, colorful and full of medieval flavor. There is a square on the island called Birger Jarl Torg, which is the center of the island. Important buildings on the island are all around this square. The square is named after the founder of Stockholm, Birger Jarl. In the center of the square is the statue of Berggill. The tall Knights Island Church (Riddarholmskyrkan) is the most prominent building on Knights Island. The black cast-iron spires on the Gothic red-brick main building soar into the sky. Built in the 13th century, Knights Island Church was originally a monastery and later a burial place for Swedish monarchs and nobles.
