In 1915, Sweden decided to build a new cemetery in Anskid, south of Stockholm, and opened a global call for designs. Works by young pragmatist movement designers Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lorenz were selected. Construction of the cemetery began in 1917, and it took three full years to complete due to the lush pine trees growing on the rubble on the ground. The architects took advantage of pristine natural beauty to create a serene and beautiful environment that has had a significant impact on cemetery design around the world.
