About Suzhou

The beauty of Suzhou is found in all the gardens, mountains and rivers within the city, as well as in the rich variety of ancient cultural charm and artistic atmosphere. From the numerous ancient waterside villages on the periphery of Suzhou to the Humble Administrator’s Garden, a World Heritage Site, and the Suzhou Museum, the exquisite delights of Suzhou are endless. Suzhou is located on a network of waterways and the city streets are built to follow the rivers, producing the unique style of “little bridges, flowing water and households.” The Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji’s poem, "Night Mooring at Maple Bridge", has caused tourists from ancient and modern times to flock to Maple Bridge and hear the bells of Hanshan Temple. The mountains of Lingyan, Taiping, Tianchi and Dongting are scattered along the banks of Lake Tai outside of Gusu District and showcase the majesty of nature.

This is one of "China's Four Gardens" and a world cultural heritage site. The Humble Administrator’s Garden is known for its water landscape that highlights the ambiance of the Southern Chinese villages built on bodies of water. It is elegant and delicately designed. In the garden, different kinds of ancient architecture were built on water. They are scattered strategically and not one is the same as another. The garden is divided into three parts: the east, the middle, and the west. Each part has its own characteristics, especially the central garden, which basically maintains the simple and natural style of the Ming Dynasty gardens and represents the best of the whole garden.

In 1984, a painting by famous chinese artist Chen Yifei announced Zhouzhuang Water Town to the world, and since then Zhouzhuang has been regarded by many as one of the best water towns in China. This ancient town has a history of more than 900 years old with many houses built in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Known as Yao City or Zhenfang lane in ancient times, the town was once a part of the Kingdom of Wu, playing an important role in the distribution of silk, ceramics, art pieces, and food. With lakes on the four sides, the beauty of Zhouzhuang has to be discovered through its water lanes and stone bridges. Taking a boat ride would be an interesting option to tour around the town. The predecessor of Su Da was called Soochow University. It was founded in 1900 by the Christian Supervisory Board in Suzhou, China. It is the first Western-style university in the country. The old school gate has quite a literary atmosphere. Suzhou University has three campuses: Tianciezhuang Campus, Dushu Lake Campus and Yangcheng Lake Campus. We are here at the headquarters of the new school gate on Ganjiang East Road. As one of the most beautiful universities in China, Suzhou University is absolutely worthy of its name. The walled creeper has a wooden door that lasted a long time and a strong Republican style. The photos are really not enough to show the beauty of the campus. There is a gymnasium built between 1934 and 1937. The beautiful western-style red brick building, Jingzheng Building, was once a mathematics science college. It is mainly made in the British Gothic Revival style. It is two stories high and has beautiful stone carvings on the door.  Su Da Headquarters Address: 1 Shiyan Street

I always make it a point to go to Pingjiang Road when I go to Suzhou. On Pingjiang Road, you can see the empty streets, or the bustle of the crowd. You can listen to the rain on the stone, or the small bridges; the autumn flower wall is also very beautiful. Stepping on the bluestone board here, imagine a girl holding a paper umbrella. When you walk into Pingjiang Road, you will always have a different feeling in your heart. You can also become a part of the landscape when you are on Pingjiang Road.

There is a tea room on the mountainside where you can sit with a cup of tea in the open air, quiet and comfortable. Don’t miss the Shoutao Lake under the Tianping Mountain. You can enjoy the Suzhou Tianpingshan during autumn if you want to have a visual feast. The maple leaves of Suzhou Tianping Mountain gradually change colour as Suzhou autumn becomes thicker.  In the process of reddening, the colour of maple leaves will change first and foremost. Even in a single tree there will be various colours, dark green, bright yellow, orange red, blush and deep red. During the red maple season, the peaks of the mountains are surrounded by red clouds and Danfeng. When it comes to the autumn landscape, the maple leaf is always prominent. Perhaps everyone is thinking about Beijing Xiangshan, but let me tell you that it is not far from Shanghai in Tianpingshan, Suzhou!

The Huqiu Mountain Scenic Area has a long history of more than 2,500 years. It is known as the “first mountain in Wuzhong”. The poet Su Dongpo of the Song Dynasty once wrote the famous saying “When you don’t visit Huqiu Mountain in Suzhou, it’s a pity!” Tiger Hill, in Suzhou, is not only a scenic spot, but also a cultural landmark of the city. Tiger Hill is not very high, so it is not particularly tiring to go up. Denghuqiu mountain is not high. It is sometimes lively, sometimes quiet, with lush branches that are accompanied by the sound of flowing water.  There are a lot of previous historical stories about the place, and you can ask any of the guides to tell you about them. There is a small square on the top of Huqiu, and there is a Tiger Hill Tower in the middle. It is the first leaning tower in China and the symbol of Suzhou. I didn't know it was oblique at the time. I wanted my picture to look symmetrical, but I found that it was not possible. Later, I realized that the tower was a little tilted.

The Kaiyuan on the side of Taihu Lake is a garden that we mistakenly hit. Originally, there was already a Humble Administrator's Garden in the private garden, and I thought there was no need to go to a garden. However, it turns out that we have not made a mistake. This garden is also an unexpected harvest of our trip. More elegant than the park, more than a garden, this is the Kaiyuan. Kaiyuan, commonly known as Xijia Garden, was built in 1933 to welcome the Emperor Kangxi. Walking along the Taihu Lake, we often compare this with the West Lake inadvertently. Walking in Kaiyuan is a bit like Fenghe in the West Lake. Of course, the garden here is not as big as the Quyuan Fenghe, and the Kaiyuan is more refined and detailed. When I first entered the garden, I couldn't find any difference with other Su-style gardens, but when I walked through the lotus pond to see Taihu Lake, I suddenly became more and more cheerful. Standing on the edge of the Taihu Lake, the wind blowing in my face, the aura of this garden was enchanting.
