East Thessaloniki Byzantine Walls

Byzantine Walls located in the old city of Ano Poli(Upper Town), built in the Byzantine period is very old, is the highest place in Thessaloniki, and is also a good place to overlook the city. Although it has experienced the vicissitudes, it has witnessed the glory and prosperity of the past.

Thessaloniki was built in 315 BC, and in order to prevent foreign invasion, the city walls were constantly built and fortified. During the Byzantine Empire, the city walls were reinforced frequently. Until the 19th century, the old city walls were demolished. A section of the remnant wall can still be seen. Recently, the walls have been repaired in sections.

Going up the city, you can find the Byzantine wall that stayed there. This wall that has been broken for thousands of years. Standing on the wall, you can see the sea at the foot of the mountain. It is said that when the weather is good, you can also see the hungry mountain Olympus 100 kilometers away.
