About Uji-shi

Uji-shi (Uji City) is home to Byodo-in Temple, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sits across the Uji River, as well as the Ujigami Shrine, a Japanese Shinto shrine. It was a key transportation point in the olden days. The Phoenix Hall in Byodo-in Temple is a national treasure that faces the Ayu Pond and houses the statue of Amitabha. Legend has it that an aristocrat had a vision of a pure land of bliss in his dreams, and thus built the Phoenix Hall in its likeness. Uji-shi is also home to a renowned site of production for high-quality green tea. Visitors can indulge in a relaxing experience of tea ceremony rites in the city tea house of Taiho-an, even without prior knowledge of the tradition.
