UNESCO World Heritage-Cultural Site
Galle Fort, also called Galle Castle, was built by Dutch colonists. The sturdy old walls are the landmark of Galle Fort. It protected the ancient city during the tsunami in South-Asia in 2004. The area contains European style buildings: there are over 100 houses as well as temples, commercial, and governmental buildings. At the southeastern edge of the fort wall, there is the Point Utrecht Bastion. At the top, there is a light house that is over 10 meters tall. It is a landmark of Galle Fort and can be seen on many Galle souvenirs.
