Historic Lizhou Town was once known as “Suyi County.” It is located in the north of Xichang City. Historic Lizhou Town has a long and storied history as one of the ancient stops used by yak caravans on the Southern Silk Road. Known as the northern gate of Xichang, the town is an important place for political, economic and cultural exchanges among all local ethnic groups. Featured sites within the town include the remains of three ancient cities and some Neolithic ruins. Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Liu Bocheng, Nie Rongzhen and many other important members of the older generation of proletarian revolutionaries both fought and lived in Lizhou. At the famous Lizhou meeting, the Central Red Army officially proposed the term "Long March" when making the decision—of great historical significance—to take the long journey north to Northern Shaanxi. Lizhou is a famous town which holds special significance in the history of the Long March.
