Slender West Lake Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
This is Yangzhou.
It's best to come to Yangzhou on weekdays, otherwise the weekend experience may not be as good. The main purpose of visiting Yangzhou is to eat and play. In the morning, arrange to have morning tea. We recommend the Garden Teahouse or Ye Chun on Yanfu Road (after eating, you can take a walk nearby, there are sightseeing boats and the Tianci Zen Temple). If you want something more upscale, you can go to Quyuan for morning tea, which is right next to Shouxihu Lake. For lunch or dinner, you can find a restaurant to try Huaiyang cuisine. We recommend Yangzhou Banquet, Pingshan Banquet, Yangzhou Lion Tower, Xishi Tower, etc. As for places to visit, start with Daming Temple, then go to Shouxihu Lake, Dongguan Street, Ge Garden, He Garden. Yangzhou is a place for slow living, so take your time to savor it.
Slender West Lake in Yangzhou
Slender West Lake is located in the northwest of Yangzhou City in Jiangsu Province. It's a beautiful park with gardens, temples and pagodas. 🦢🏞️🏯
The history is also very interesting and many sings are biliangual in Chinese and English. It is known for its narrow waterways (so the name slander) that connect gardens, bridges and the area's numerous picturesque spots. Great for taking pictures! 📸
My favorite spot was the bridge on picture 1, so nice.
🎟️ Ticket is about 100RMB, year card is also available

Classic Chinese Park
It is similar to most of the Chinese lake parks 🎋🌳. Those who have more interest into Chinese culture, monuments, gardens and architecture is a great place to explore 🎍. You can either explore the park by walking or by boat ride ⛵️. I heard its more beautiful in spring with blossoms.🌺🌻

Water town you can’t miss: Yangzhou
Slender West Lake park in Jiangsu is a gorgeous scenic spot you should visit. You can either take a long walk around the lake, enjoying the scenery and cultural spots, or take a long and beautiful ride in the boats.
During spring, weather is nice and flowers make this park an outstanding location. There are many beautiful locations for the perfect picture. Although, during our visit the park was so crowded we couldn’t enjoy it as much as we wanted it. Easy to realize many people travel from far away to visit this gorgeous lake.
Inside the park, there are so many special spots that will bring your attention, from the gardens to the white pagoda, boats decorations and blossomed trees, stone laying, bridges, architecture.. absolutely amazing. This place also holds strong cultural heritage and history.

Geyuan Garden Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Ge Garden: The mountain light of four seasons is condensed in the stone, and the shadow of bamboo is swaying with the cool autumn
Ge Garden, named after bamboo and famous for its stones, is the oldest and best preserved salt merchant garden in Yangzhou. If 'March fireworks in Yangzhou' is the endorsement written by Li Bai for Yangzhou, then 'the best place in the west of bamboo' is the promotion given by Jiang Kui to Ge Garden. The lush green bamboo separated by a wall separates the hustle and bustle of Dongguan Street and soothes the anxiety and impatience brought by my hurried journey.
'Prefer to eat without meat, rather than live without bamboo', the owner of Ge Garden, Huang Yingtai, cherishes and loves bamboo, even changed his name to 'Zhiyun', and planted his residence full of lush bamboo. Naming the garden 'Ge' is not only a clever take on the charm of the Chinese character and shape of bamboo; the three strokes in the painting also represent the perfect realm of the three fullness of fortune, salary, and longevity. This is also the most famous classical garden in Yangzhou besides Slender West Lake - if you don't come to Ge Garden, you haven't been to Yangzhou.
Four Seasons Rockery: A mountain has many seasons, and a season is in many mountains
Chinese freehand brushwork is committed to integrating thousands of weather in a square inch. A long scroll of the four seasons is also condensed into an eternal real scene by Ge Garden. 'Spring mountain is light and like a smile, summer mountain is green and like a drop, autumn mountain is clear and like makeup, winter mountain is bleak and like sleep', and the winter and spring mountains are separated by a wall. Through the hole in the west wall of the winter mountain, you can glimpse the stalagmites at the entrance of the garden outside - winter is here, will spring be far away?
Admiring the autumn mountain in autumn is just right: the craftsman cleverly borrows the texture and unique color of the newly built yellow stone, and constructs a rugged and changeable three-dimensional landscape in the square inch of the world. Standing on the Buddha Yun Pavilion on the top of the mountain, you can overlook the autumn mountain below, and you can look far away to the Slender West Lake to the north. The mountain is also planted with ancient cypresses, red maples and other colorful and angular plants, which are commensurate with the handsome mountain body, making this live 'Autumn Mountain Sunset' picture always new.
Baoshan Building: Don't go out and the sky is spring, and the dust horses are all resting
The slender Baoshan Building embraces the summer and autumn mountains with a long corridor, hence the name. The garden has the saying of 'mustard sumeru' and 'pot middle world', and the title of Baoshan Building 'Pot Sky from Spring' also means to see the big from the small. It is like a time and space tunnel, collecting spring, summer, autumn and winter, heaven and earth, day and moon: climbing the building and looking, you can overlook the clear pool and mountain stone flowers and trees under the building, as far as the entrance of the spring mountain; to the north, you can look far away. Yangzhou city scenery, hear the voices of people in the market; walking along the long corridor in the building, there are exquisite and transparent summer and majestic and heavy autumn within a hundred steps.
Wan Bamboo Garden: The green shadow shakes the sky and the blue clouds are low, and the bamboo dances with the wind and the rhyme is long
Bamboo is the spirit of Ge Garden. In Wan Bamboo Garden, there are now more than 60 kinds of ornamental bamboo and more than 20,000 poles. There is a pavilion in the depths of the bamboo forest, named after Wang Wei's poem 'Bamboo Pavilion'. The couplet in the pavilion 'For the heavy frost festival, can be empty to respond to the heart of things' also reflects Huang Zhiyun's love for the bamboo's spirit. Standing in the hexagonal pavilion surrounded by bamboo trees on all sides, waiting for the breeze to pass through the bamboo tips, the bamboo shadows swaying, listening to the clear and unique sound of the bamboo leaves, I can't help but think: when the 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Forest' in the Wei and Jin Dynasties lived under the bamboo and sang happily, Is it so comfortable and hearty?
'Spring, summer, autumn and winter mountain light is different, the wind is clear and the dew bamboo shadow is colorful', come to Ge Garden in autumn, you can enjoy the fragrant osmanthus, golden ginkgo, and fiery maple's strong autumn rhyme at the same time.

As the saying goes: Fireworks in March Yangzhou-Yangzhou one-day tour can also be very enjoyable
Yangzhou University
weekend suddenly thought of going to Yangzhou for a circle, thinking about the book, finished the high-speed rail ticket, and went down The high-speed train took a taxi to Yangzhou University. There was no one on the weekend campus. The spring flowers are very suitable for taking pictures. There are many colleges in the park. One of the colleges is super retro. It feels like the Republic of China. After entering, I also saw the lab, which is super retro. The kind of bathroom, the old-fashioned look, the mirror is a simple and simple glass to open a piece, attached to the wall, very atmosphere.
Liu Xie Kee noodle restaurant (now is the net red noodle restaurant)
Walk over Yangzhou University to go to lunch, the small supermarket on the road encounters the net red yogurt, eats chocolate sorbet, through the heart When I went to the fat-intestine noodle shop recommended by my friend, the fat intestines seemed to be cleaned very cleanly. In fact, I still like to eat the fat meat inside. I bite the skin and the fat oil in the mouth to give each other their own charm, which is wonderful. Their crab yellow meatballs are also one of the characteristics. A gentle crab yellow juice can not help but flow out, the ball is elastic and chewy, the noodle shop is not big, and it is full of people.
Park
I don't like the bustling downtown, I am going to go to the park in the afternoon for a circle, a garden-world cultural heritage, there are green bamboos, come back to view the information, the original The owner of the garden especially likes bamboo, and the name of the garden is also bamboo.
The garden is filled with large pieces of emerald green bamboo. Walking inside is a happy and happy couple. A couple of photographers taking pictures of the Republic of China, photographers all kinds of plans, it seems that the knowledgeable old man took the SLR and carefully studied it carefully. The grandmother of the child, the couple walks.
Dessert Shop
The garden is coming out for a walk, passing through a regular underground corridor, and the outside world, outside the sun, the bottom of the heart is cool.
I met a private dessert shop for a while, a couple opened together, the decoration style is simple, there is no complicated color, the overall white, the wall is full of paintings, sofa cotton, bookcase wood, balcony It is covered with green climbing plants, spider plants, etc., and has a dining table with a layer of misty white gauze, which is separated from the outside guests by a low-key, two floors upstairs and downstairs.
Eat dessert, read the book, sort out the photos, prepare for the resurrection to eat hot pot
Eight-flag old Beijing hot pot
downtown walked a circle, feeling Yangzhou whole The city is very clean, the city is small but very comfortable, there is a street, and many people who ride to work feel very retro.
Selected an old Beijing copper pot hot pot, eating sesame sauce, copper pot hot pot and Sichuan flavor hot pot is different, its soul is meat and sesame sauce, once the meat is not good, it is found in minutes, because it is clear soup, There are no hidden components.
Iron skewer kebabs are delicious, sprinkled with cumin chili powder is perfect
waiter's incomparable enthusiasm, feeling the kind of illusion in Beijing.
West Lake
hot pot after the end and went to the thin West Lake strolled a circle, the day is a bit dark, the camera did not take any photos, a very relaxing day, the high-speed rail back to Nanjing, the era The progress can make it a wonderful day for you to travel to and from a city.

At the end of the alley, you can check in at the "Siwang Pavilion" building, where the short alley encapsulates the ordinary life of the locals.
Dongguan Street
A very representative historical old street in Yangzhou, with lanterns hanging from the eaves of old buildings along the road, full of New Year's atmosphere, it is a great place for a city stroll. Ge Garden
I personally think it's more worth visiting than He Garden~ The exquisite garden and rockery are very typical of Chinese elegance. Pishi Street
There are many interesting creative shops, as well as a big "Yangzhou" sign, which is very suitable for taking photos.
Er Fen Ming Yue Lou
A free garden hidden in the alley, not very big and with few people, but still encapsulates the poetic and picturesque charm of the gardens in the south of the Yangtze River.
Grand Canal Museum
No ticket is required, but you need to make a reservation in advance.
"About Accommodation"
This time I came to Yangzhou to better experience the market life of this small town, so I deliberately stayed at the reconstructed Bingyuan Pavilion Cultural Resort Hotel on Dongguan Street~ In a century-old salt merchant's residence, through the understanding of the aesthetics of life, it has been upgraded and transformed, but you can feel a different kind of relaxation and tranquility. Sitting in the tea room in the garden landscape and chatting and tasting tea in the afternoon really feels like the right way to open a trip to Yangzhou!

A famous Chinese private garden
The garden was easy to get inside with the ticket buying process being very quiet and welcoming. There is also lots of parking nearby.
Inside the garden there is lots to explore. I like how much of the building there is to explore with rooms to show off the most recent residents living conditions. You can see the masters bedrooms and study room alongside some of the rooms built for entertaining.
The garden was a private residence and garden from the late Qing dynasty for the He family. There are lots of signs around the museum which are bilingual. There is also a lot of staff dressed up in traditional costume which adds to the experience.
We enjoyed a 2 hour visit on a weekend winter and it was very quiet.#

He Garden in Yangzhou
He Garden in Yangzhou was built slightly later than Ge Garden, with Ge Garden dating back to the early 19th century and He Garden to the late 19th century. Of course, both were expanded and renovated on the basis of previous gardens. Another senior figure in the world of ancient gardens, Mr. Luo Zhewen, called He Garden 'the number one garden of the late Qing dynasty.' Due to the era, one of the garden's characteristics is the integration of some Western architectural elements, including distinctly Western-style interior furnishings in the residence.
One of the garden's notable features is a 1500-meter-long covered corridor that connects the eastern and western gardens and the residence, fully reflecting the beauty of the Chinese garden's winding paths and the ingenuity of its interconnected layout. It is said to be unparalleled in other gardens. Strolling between the two levels of such a long corridor, the scenery changes with every step, with varying heights creating a truly engaging experience of layered mountains and complex waters, and the charm of twists and turns.
The garden does not particularly aim to create a unique effect with stacked rockeries, and it seems that there is no central landscape feature designed as the focal point of the whole garden. Instead, the rockeries, buildings, and plants complement each other, creating a harmonious and natural appearance. I also like the row of wall-attached rockeries along the garden wall, which spans dozens of meters. Although it also creates winding mountain paths and hollow stone valleys, it does not overly emphasize this effect, which I think is better. The purpose of building a garden is generally to create an 'urban mountain forest,' but the specific approach to 'nature' is not a simple copy.
Some of the detailed treatments in He Garden are also highly praised. For example, the rows of decorative windows between the corridors fully utilize the various functions of this architectural element, providing decorative beauty and adding spatial depth, with the sides of the corridor also using the windows to create contrasting views. Another example is the design of the floor in the Boat Hall. To match the concept of the 'Boat Hall,' the surrounding floor is paved with tiles in a ripple pattern, which is a very ingenious and meticulous idea.

The Lhasa 'Sunset' at the China Grand Canal Museum!
'The Potala Palace - A World Cultural Heritage from the Snow Land' special exhibition is being held in exhibition halls 11 and 12 on the second floor of the China (Yangzhou) Grand Canal Museum, and will run until May 19, 2024. The special exhibition is the most concentrated display of Potala Palace cultural relics in mainland China, featuring a total of 101 sets and 169 pieces, all of which come from the Potala Palace Administration. One third of the relics are being exhibited for the first time.
The special exhibition is divided into three parts: 'Millennium Majesty', which introduces the thousand-year construction legend of the Potala Palace and its unique architectural form; 'Universe Within', which comprehensively displays the 'Tibetan Art Encyclopedia' that encompasses everything within the Potala Palace; 'Heavenly Craftsmanship on the Road to Heaven', which showcases the maintenance of the Potala Palace and the achievements in protecting ancient scriptures and books. The exhibition opens a window to a deeper understanding of the Potala Palace, allowing a panoramic view of its majestic palace fortress and a close-up glimpse of its treasured relics in all their stunning beauty.
The Lhasa 'Sunset' at the end of the special exhibition is pure and flawless, inviting visitors to pause for a moment and experience the purification of the soul.
Fireworks in March descend upon Yangzhou, and here comes the most worry-free travel guide
Just after the Qingming holiday, it's definitely the best time to visit Yangzhou, because there won't be that many people anymore!
Duration Recommended for three days and two nights, but two days and one night is also enough!
Accommodation It's recommended to stay near Dongguan Street, close to Pishi Street, Slender West Lake, Ge Garden, and He Garden, all within walking distance. If you're on a budget, consider a homestay, which has the charm of the Jiangnan area, but if you're a solo female traveler, it's best to choose a hotel. There are many alleys on Dongguan Street, which might be scary at night.
Attire Light-colored clothes are especially suitable for taking photos in Yangzhou, absolutely beautiful in a modern Chinese style! But be sure to bring a jacket, as it can be a bit cool in the morning and evening.
Travel Route
day1 Morning tea - Slender West Lake (3h) - Dongguan Street, Pishi Street for food and photos (3h) - Queue for Huaiyang cuisine in the evening - Night stroll on the pedestrian street, make lacquer fans
day2 Choose between He Garden/Ge Garden - Take a taxi to the area near Wanda Plaza for lunch (no queue) - Grand Canal Museum
Cuisine
Yangzhou Yogurt Highly recommended by local students! A choice that won't go wrong, be sure to try the jasmine flavor~
Tiny Plum Blossom Cakes A shop on Pishi Street, with red bean small round cakes flavor, soft and delicious, with a layer of red bean paste underneath, slightly sweet and very tasty!
Lion's Head Different from the Lion's Head in Shandong, it's softer and more tender, very good~
Yangzhou Fried Rice Recommended at Dongguan Street , with distinct grains, chewy and addictive
Friendly Reminder
Some recommended morning tea places may require a long queue. In fact, any roadside breakfast shop has good flavors, with fried rice, Yangchun noodles, dried tofu silk, lion's head, etc. You can choose according to your time situation
There is no subway in Yangzhou, and there are many electric bikes on the road. Be sure to walk on the edge and pay attention to safety
Slender West Lake is beautiful, and the Grand Canal Museum's halls 1, 2, 3, 8, 11, and 12 each have their own characteristics. Travel off-peak, and hope everyone can be happy!
The Grand Canal Museum's Potala Palace Themed Exhibition
I visited the China Grand Canal Museum on Sunday. It is a newly built museum in recent years, featuring many spectacular exhibition halls. These halls display the historical changes and cultural development of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal since ancient times. Inside the museum, there is also a Tibetan culture exhibition hall themed around the Potala Palace. Upon entering, I was immediately struck by the overwhelming presence of distinctive Tibetan elements—money, gold ornaments, gilded Lama statues, Thangkas, Tibetan monk robes, and more. Among the dazzling array of gold artifacts, one can also see the opulence of the upper echelons of Tibetan society, as well as the suffering of the common people. Every character and object is a shock!

Strolling through Daming Temple to admire the cherry blossoms
Setting off from the north gate of Slender West Lake, it's a quick journey to Daming Temple, the foremost temple in Eastern Huai.
The incense burns brightly, and the devout come to pray. Pay homage to Master Jianzhen, gaze upon the Qiling Pagoda, and take a look at the relics of the Fifth Spring in the world. Have a pleasant time.
Leaving Daming Temple and heading north, you'll reach the bustling Jianzhen Avenue, where white cherry blossoms bloom in abundance, beautiful and fragrant. It's a stroke of 'cherry' good fortune.
In March, the cherry blossoms are in bloom; Yangzhou is really fun to visit.
The Millennium Ancient Temple | Daming Temple in Yangzhou
Daming Temple, located on the middle peak of Shugang in the northwest suburbs of Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, was named for its initial construction during the Daming years of Emperor Xiaowu of the Southern Song Dynasty (457-464 AD). Over the past 1500 years, the temple's name has undergone many changes, and the temple we see now was built during the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty. During the Tang Dynasty, when Master Jianzhen served as the abbot of Daming Temple, he traveled to Japan to teach Buddhist scriptures and Chinese culture, making Daming Temple an important ancient temple in the history of Sino-Japanese Buddhist and cultural relations.
The Daming Temple is divided into three parts: the central part is the main temple architecture, the eastern part is the Qiling Pagoda, and the western part is the garden-style backyard. The main temple buildings in the central area of the scenic spot are divided into three routes running from south to north. Along the central axis from south to north are the archway, the mountain gate, and the Mahavira Hall. The western route mainly features Ouyang Xiu; to the south is the Pingshan Hall built by Ouyang Xiu when he was the governor of Yangzhou, and to the north is the Gulin Hall built by Su Dongpo when he held the same position. Further north is the Jianzhen Memorial Hall, with the Sutra Depository Tower to its east. The Qiling Pagoda in the eastern part was originally built by Emperor Yang Jian of the Sui Dynasty to celebrate his birthday. The pagoda we see now is a reconstruction of the Sui Dynasty's pagoda, with 9 stories, housing Buddhist relics and a nanmu Buddha pagoda inside. Visitors can climb to the top of the pagoda to overlook the entire Daming Temple and gaze into the distance at the Slender West Lake.
The Jianzhen Memorial Hall is the most important building in Daming Temple. Jianzhen traveled to Japan six times, bringing Chinese Buddhism and culture to Japan. He presided over the construction of the Toshodai-ji in Nara, Japan, and eventually passed away there. The Jianzhen Memorial Hall was built to mimic the style of Toshodai-ji.
