About Yongzhou

Yongzhou is situated in the south of Hunan province at the confluence of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers. It is surrounded by forest and has a rich history – the Tang dynasty writer Liu Zongyuan wrote the famous work 'Eight Accounts of Yongzhou' during his exile here. Major attractions include Liuzi Temple, Wuxi Stele Forest, Shanggantang Village and the Yangming and Jiuyi Mountains.

Jiuyi Mountain National Forest Park is in south Ningyuan County, Yongzhou City. As one of the birthplaces of Xiangjiang River, Jiuyi Mountain has lush trees and vegetation of stone fir, cedar and mottled bamboo, known as the "three treasures of Jiuyi," with ponds and flowing rivers. The main attractions in the scenic area include the Mausoleum of Emperor Shui, Zixia Rock, Shuiyuan Peak, and Yongfu Temple.

The main peak in the forest park, Wangfotai, has an altitude of 1,600 meters and travelers can climb up the peak and overlook the vast scenery. It will be the best period for admiring azaleas from late April to early May, and tourists can stand in a high place to enjoy a sea of azaleas.

The Liuzi Temple is the core attraction of the Liuzi Scenic Area. It was built by the Yongzhou people to commemorate the Tang Dynasty's progressive thinker, politician and distinguished writer and ancient official in Yongzhou, Liu Zongyuan. Liuzi Temple is seated on Liuzi Street in the west of Xiaoshui, Yongzhou. The Liuzi Temple is a brick-and-wood structure and there are three stone carvings of the Liuzi Temple on the temple door. Upon entering the temple, you can find the structure in three-door and three-room style and the stage with double eaves and eight columns is immediately apparent. After going to the second half of the nave, and then into the main hall, there is a statue of Liu Zongyuan in the temple which is notable for historical human sacrifice.

Shang Gan Tang Village is located in Xia Ceng Pu Town to the southwest of the capital city of Jiang Yong County of Yong Zhou city in Hunan Province. Shang Gan Tang is a village that features mountains and rivers in the surroundings. The village sits in the east and faces west. With Ping Feng Mountain lying in the back and Xie Mu River meandering in the front, Shang Gan Tang has a superb enclosed village setting. Most of the residential buildings in the village were built in the late Qing Dynasty. The layouts of the houses have deliberate symmetrical designs. The white walls of the houses and the surrounding green waters are typical architectural characteristics in southern Hunan Province.
