Born in 1801, Jeracic served in the army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was the first governor of Croatia from 1848 to 1859 and was a symbol of the Croatian people’s struggle for independence. The equestrian statue of Governor Jelacic stood in Governor’s Square in Jeracic in 1866. The square was renamed after World War II, and the statue of the governor was replaced by a statue of guerrillas. After Croatia became independent in 1991, the statue of Governor Jeracic moved back to the square.
