    Suka Shrine was originally called "Daiyuzan Gion Zenji" and was the last temple of Jotenji (Hakata Tsujido) of the Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect. The shrine that enshrines Gozu Tenno in the precincts has been holding a grand festival (Gion Festival) since ancient times, supported by the faith of Ichien Amaki due to the influence of Hakata. This is the predecessor of Suka Shrine. The main shrine is made of Sanmasha style hafu and is a cypress bark roof. Okusu (700 years old) on the premises is magnificent!     15 minutes walk from Amaki station. Originally, it was the branch temple of Jotenji, the Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect, "Daiyuzan Gion Zenji". Due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era, it became a single Suka Shrine. (The temple was relocated to the other side of the road and renamed "Kannonji".) The deities are Omiki no Kami, Kushi Inadahime no Kami, Susanoo no Kami, Fire God, and Shohikona no Kami. The current main shrine was built around 1820. It is said that the sacred tree "Gion no Okusu" in the precincts is a couple with Okusu of Anchoji Temple. It is a giant tree with a thick trunk and feels awe with its vitality. ...
