Dunnsteinburg Castle was built as a 14th-century fortification on the Northumberland coast of northern England, and was used as a watchtower for German ships during World War II. Now only a few stone remains are left due to port construction.
The mountain road to the castle is relatively gentle, and there are some good places nearby to have a picnic. Seasonal opening, time needs to be checked in advance. The castle is free to British Heritage and National Trust members otherwise the ticket is £5, no toilets, only one shop.
