South Park Street Cemetery

A very cool and spooky cemetery in Calcutta. It is a piece of British history that remains in the city. It's free to walk around and adsorb the creepy atmosphere. Too bad it closes every evening at around 5pm or you could really give yourself a spook.

India’s South Park Street Cemetery was one of the earliest non-church cemeteries in the world. It features a rich blend of Gothic and Hindu-inspired design, as well as some famous mystery inscriptions. The strikingly ambiguous “Grave 363” reads only, “a virtuous mother, died 1825”.

A heritage site of India and a relic of Kolkata's British colonial past, a walk through this cemetery is like stepping back in time. It's interesting to see both the architecture of the tombs and the way the greenery has grown around them.
